I am somewhat confused by this announcement. The Basic account as was was er Basic and had NO ads. Then there was the Paid option. This had no Ads either. LJ introduced a while back the Plus account, really aimed at people who wanted a little more in their user pics and so on, and in return would accept ads in their journal.

Re-introducing Basic Accounts with ads seems pointless. You already have Basic plus Ads in the form of the Plus accounts.

My chief concern is my Basic accounts opened before LJ pulled the ability to make new basic accounts. I do not expect to see my pages contaminated with ads, irrespective of whether I am logged in or not.

My proposal is to reintroduce Basic accounts without ads. Then should the newly created Basic account fall into disuse after a period of time, I suggest 90 days, then it gets ads on it.

That way if a user made regular entries they could avoid ads, and if they don't bother to update it for 90 days then may be fair to assume they are not using the account. Perhaps.

I agree with the other posts about ads showing for non-logged in users. It would turn them off.

How about having some quality control? Let LJ users decide who gets to have space and let them pre-approve the ad before it is placed.
